District Information

The 72nd House District is wholly contained within Clark County, Ohio. The major community in the district is the city of Springfield which is the 11th largest city in the State of Ohio. Founded in 1801, Springfield has a population of over 64,000 people. Springfield and Clark County have a diverse population with an active African-American community and a growing Latino presence. Other communities in the district include the City of New Carlisle and the Villages of Enon, Donnelsville and Medway. With a large urban area as the population anchor surrounded by suburbs and farmland, the district has a very balanced political standing and has a republican index of 46.6%. Representatives of this district have to be able to reach out to many different constituencies and often need to balance competing positions on various issues. The City of Springfield is ideally located along I-70 between Dayton and Columbus. This geographic location has been a major reason why Springfield has historically attracted manufacturers and supporting industries. While the peak of our manufacturing prominence has since passed, Springfield and Clark County elected office holders are very engaged in attracting new, 21st century employment opportunities to our community. Employment in the district is centered on the downtown area where a new state of the art hospital is under construction, several industrial parks along major thoroughfares, a new technology park, and nearby Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Honda of America.

We are fortunate to have many institutions of higher education located in or close to Clark County including Wittenberg University and Clark State Community College. In addition to opportunities for higher education, the district is home to four school districts and a career technology center.

Springfield is fortunate to have a vibrant cultural scene with several venues for the enjoyment of the visual and performing arts. Clark County is also home to many well preserved historic structures that are open to the public to help interpret the areas many contributions to the State of Ohio and the Nation. The district also hosts a number of parks and recreation facilities that offer seasonal recreation activities for all ages to enjoy.

Perhaps most importantly, the district is home to Young’s Jersey Dairy the second most visited tourist attraction in the Miami Valley and home of the world famous Bull shake.
